What it does

Enter each debt you owe — its balance, interest rate and minimum payment — and the planner runs the month-by-month maths for the two best-known payoff strategies side by side. You see the date you become debt-free under each one, the total interest you pay, and a chart of your total balance falling over time.

How to use it

  1. Add every debt: credit cards, personal loans, buy-now-pay-later plans, car finance. Use the balance and APR from your latest statement.
  2. Enter the minimum payment for each.
  3. Add the extra amount you can put towards debt each month, on top of the minimums. Even a small figure changes the date noticeably.
  4. Compare the two results and read the order of attack the planner gives you.

Avalanche or snowball?

Avalanche pays off the highest interest rate first. It is always the cheapest route. Snowball pays off the smallest balance first. It usually costs a little more, but you clear whole debts sooner, and that early momentum is why more people actually finish with it. The planner shows you exactly how much the difference is in your case, so you can decide whether the quicker wins are worth it.

Good to know

  • The results assume your interest rates and minimums stay the same. Re-run it whenever a rate changes or a balance-transfer offer ends.
  • If the minimums alone are more than you can pay, a free, non-profit debt adviser can often negotiate reduced payments or frozen interest. Talking to one early gives you more options.
