September 2026 was a busy month in AI, but most of it will not change what you earn. We went through the launches, shutdowns and policy updates from late August to September 26 and kept only the 15 that affect people who make money with AI: faceless YouTube creators, digital product sellers, freelancers, people who use AI at work, and small shops.

The short answer: three things need action this week if they apply to you (Sora export, Reve downloads, Mechanical Turk closing). The new models are real upgrades but mostly not worth a plan change. And the biggest creator changes (YouTube, AdSense) have deadlines in 2027, so you have time to prepare calmly.

The short version

  • Urgent: the Sora API closed on September 24, Reve stops making images on September 27, and Mechanical Turk closes on September 30. Export your files now.
  • New models: GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6 Sol and Luna, Claude Opus 5.5 and Gemini 3.8 Flash all shipped. Test them on your real tasks before paying for anything new.
  • Plans: ChatGPT Pro at $200 is closed to new sign-ups. A $500 plan is only a rumour.
  • Creators: YouTube announced AI thumbnails and A/B testing of whole video cuts. Etsy is testing AI-suggested titles and tags. Google started a spam update on September 24.
  • Money reporting: AdSense will count impressions differently from February 17, 2027. Your impression numbers will drop; that is a counting change, not lost traffic.
  • Ignore for now: Gemini 4 dates, “Kling 4.0” pages and the $500 ChatGPT plan. None are confirmed.

How we picked these 15 changes

We started with everything announced between late August and September 26, 2026. Then we asked one question about each item: does it change what an ordinary AI earner should do, pay or avoid in the next month? If not, it is out. Big lab funding news, benchmark fights and most enterprise launches did not make the list.

Each item below has four parts. What happened (with a date and a source), who it affects, what to do this week, and how sure we are. We use three labels for that last part:

  • Confirmed: live now, stated on an official page.
  • Announced: the company said it is coming, but it is not fully rolled out or has no firm date.
  • Rumour: based on leaks, code findings or unnamed sources. Do not spend money on these.

Where sources disagree on a date, we say so rather than pick one quietly.

That is 16 rows because two related music stories share one. In the tool further down we count them as 15 changes.

OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra: big launch, narrow access

What happened. OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on September 3, 2026. Its system card calls it OpenAI’s first model to reach the “Critical” level for cybersecurity capability, so it refuses advanced hacking tasks by default (OpenAI system card). Launch dates vary by a day or two across reports; we use the system card date.

Who it affects. Mainly paying ChatGPT users and coders. The catch is where you get it. OpenAI’s help centre says GPT-6 Pro (powered by Astra) is in normal chat only on Pro, Business and Enterprise plans. Plus users get Astra only inside ChatGPT Work and Codex. Free and Go users do not get it at all (OpenAI Help Center).

Do this week. If you are on Plus, open ChatGPT Work and try Astra on one real job, such as turning a messy brief into a client proposal. Do not upgrade to Pro just because the headlines say “most intelligent”. Independent rankings are mixed: it scores well on benchmark tests but ranks lower on human-preference votes.

How sure. Confirmed.

We covered what Astra means for small game makers in our GPT-6 Astra and Higgsfield games post.

GPT-6 Sol and Luna: cheaper models for builders

What happened. On September 22, OpenAI released GPT-6 Sol (a mid-size model for coding and harder tasks) and GPT-6 Luna (a cheap model for high-volume work like summaries). OpenAI says they cost about 50% less than the GPT-5.6 models they replace. They are in ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API for most paid accounts, and Free and Go users get Luna in the desktop app (TechCrunch).

Who it affects. Anyone paying per use through the API: people running automated content pipelines, small SaaS tools, or bulk product description jobs.

Do this week. Take one workflow you run through the API and price it on the new model. Example: if a batch job costs you $30 a month on a 5.6 model, test whether Luna does it acceptably for around half that. Check quality on 20 real samples before you switch everything.

How sure. Confirmed. Exact per-token prices differ between reports, so read the price on OpenAI’s own pricing page before you budget.

Claude Opus 5.5, and the Fable catch

What happened. Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22. API prices dropped 20% to $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens (a “token” is roughly three quarters of a word). Anthropic also raised five-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans and added a saved “rate limit reset” you can use when you choose. It did not publish the new limit numbers (Anthropic).

Earlier in the month, on September 2, Anthropic released Claude Fable 5.1, a pricier top tier. On Pro it is not part of your normal limits. You pay for it with usage credits. Max plans can spend up to half their weekly limit on it at no extra cost, and Free cannot use it (Claude Help Center).

Who it affects. Writers, freelancers and coders on Claude plans, and anyone building on the Claude API.

Do this week. On Pro, use Opus 5.5 as your default and ignore Fable unless a specific task fails on Opus. On the API, re-run your cost estimate at the new prices. Anthropic says Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 follow “in the coming weeks”, so hold off on big switches until you see those.

How sure. Confirmed. The limit increase is confirmed but unquantified.

ChatGPT Pro $200: closed to new sign-ups

What happened. Since September 10, OpenAI has paused new sign-ups and upgrades to the $200 Pro plan. Existing subscribers keep it and renew as normal. The $100 Pro plan is still open. There is a one-time return window: people who had Pro $200 on September 10 (or within the 30 days before) can resubscribe within 30 days of their subscription ending (OpenAI Help Center).

Separately, TestingCatalog reported on September 24 that code references point to a $500-a-month “Pro Max” plan. OpenAI has not confirmed it (TestingCatalog).

Who it affects. Heavy ChatGPT users and coders.

Do this week. If you have Pro $200 and use it daily, do not cancel on impulse. You may not get back in. If you are on Plus and hitting limits, the $100 tier is the realistic step up. Ignore the $500 plan until OpenAI publishes a price page.

How sure. Pause: confirmed. Pro Max: rumour.

Gemini: faster Flash, a Windows app and creative connectors

What happened. Three Gemini changes matter for earners:

  • Gemini 3.8 Flash became generally available on September 2. Its API introductory price is $0.75 input and $3.75 output per million tokens until December 31, 2026, then $1.50 and $7.50 from January 1, 2027 (Google AI for Developers).
  • A Gemini app for Windows launched on September 10. Alt + Space opens it over any app, and it connects to Gmail and Drive (Gemini release notes).
  • New connected apps started rolling out on September 23, including Adobe, Picsart, Squarespace, Webflow, PandaDoc and Airtable (Android Authority).

Who it affects. App builders (the price doubling), Windows users who work in Google apps, and designers or small shops that use Adobe, Picsart or Squarespace.

Do this week. Builders: if you adopt 3.8 Flash, budget with the January 2027 price, not the introductory one. Everyone else: try one connected app on a real task, like asking Gemini to draft a PandaDoc proposal from your notes. Keep it only if it saves steps.

How sure. Confirmed. Google has not clearly said which Gemini app tiers run 3.8 Flash, so treat third-party claims about that as unconfirmed.

ChatGPT Images 2.5: worth a re-test for sellers

What happened. On September 8, OpenAI released ChatGPT Images 2.5. It promises sharper detail, up to 50% faster generation, better editing across several turns and better use of reference photos. It adds a sketch tool, templates for things like posters and merchandise, and shareable prompts. OpenAI says it is available across ChatGPT tiers on desktop, mobile and web (OpenAI). On the API, OpenAI’s developer post says token pricing is the same as the previous image model (OpenAI Developer Community).

Who it affects. YouTube thumbnail makers, printable and wall-art sellers, Etsy shops and freelance designers.

Do this week. Re-run the three prompts that failed you most in the past month, such as readable text on a poster or keeping a product the same across edits. If Images 2.5 fixes them, you may be able to drop a separate image subscription. If not, nothing changes.

How sure. Confirmed.

Shutdowns with deadlines this month

These are the items where waiting costs you something. Each one has a hard date.

Sora API: closed September 24

What happened. OpenAI shut the Sora app and web version on April 26, 2026, and the Sora API on September 24. You can export content at sora.chatgpt.com/sunset, and OpenAI recommends doing it “as soon as possible”. After the final export window, data is permanently removed. Purchased credits can be moved to Codex (OpenAI Help Center).

Who it affects. Anyone with old Sora clips, and anyone whose video tool quietly used Sora through the API.

Do this week. Export your Sora library today. Then check any third-party video tool you pay for: if it still lists Sora as a model, those requests will fail. Our Kling vs Seedance vs Veo comparison covers the main alternatives.

How sure. Confirmed.

Reve: generation ends September 27, downloads end October 31

What happened. Reve’s help centre says creating new images and videos ends on September 27, 2026, and downloading existing assets ends on October 31. Download links last two days, and you can prepare a new download every 24 hours. Uploaded images are not included (Reve Help Center).

Who it affects. Sellers and designers who made product images, mock-ups or art in Reve.

Do this week. On the web app, click “Prepare Download”, choose all dates and save the ZIP files somewhere you back up. Also keep a copy of any prompts you rely on so you can recreate a style elsewhere.

How sure. Confirmed on Reve’s own help page.

Amazon Mechanical Turk: closes September 30

What happened. Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, a 21-year-old marketplace for small paid online tasks like data labelling and surveys, shuts on September 30, 2026. Amazon has not named a replacement (TechRepublic). Reports disagree on when it was announced: TechRepublic says August 28, CNBC dated its story August 25.

Who it affects. People earning side income from micro-tasks, and small businesses that used it for data jobs.

Do this week. Withdraw any balance and download your earnings records for tax purposes before the 30th. If you want similar work, TechRepublic names Prolific, Scale AI and Mercor as platforms people are moving to. Check each one’s pay rates and requirements yourself; they are not like-for-like replacements.

How sure. Confirmed closing date.

Already gone in August: check you are not still paying

Two August shutdowns still catch people out, so they are worth a quick look even though they fall outside this month’s 15.

  • Microsoft Copilot Pro is no longer sold, and support ended August 1, 2026 (Microsoft Support). Microsoft points people to Microsoft 365 Premium at $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year in the US, as of September 2026. Its AI features work only for the account owner, not the other five people on the plan (Microsoft Store).
  • ChatGPT Atlas, OpenAI’s browser, stopped working on August 9, 2026. Its agent features moved to the ChatGPT desktop app and a Chrome extension (OpenAI Help Center).

If either still shows on your bank statement, or you were moved to a plan you did not choose, run our subscription audit checklist.

YouTube: what Made On YouTube means for faceless channels

What happened. At Made On YouTube on September 23, YouTube announced conversational editing for Shorts and the YouTube Create app, thumbnail generation in YouTube Studio that “match[es] their channel’s style”, A/B testing of up to three different cuts of a video, likeness detection on mobile with voice matching added, and real-time auto dubbing for live streams (YouTube Blog). Tubefilter reports that the live features, including live auto-dubbing, arrive in early 2027. It found no firm dates for most of the rest (Tubefilter).

Who it affects. Every YouTube creator, and faceless channels most of all, because these tools make it even easier to produce lots of similar videos.

Do this week. Pick your next upload and plan two different cuts, for example one with a 5-second hook and one with a 15-second hook. When A/B testing of cuts reaches your channel, you will be ready to run it. Our guide to YouTube hooks that stop the scroll has ideas for the first seconds.

How sure. Announced. Rollout dates are mostly unconfirmed.

Two older rules frame all of this. In July, YouTube clarified that “generic” repetitive videos and AI personas giving health, finance or legal advice are “inauthentic content” that cannot earn money (TechCrunch). And on August 10, YouTube said that from February 1, 2027, new Partner Program applicants will need 8,000 watch hours in 12 months or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days. Existing members are not affected (YouTube Blog). Today’s bar is 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views, and existing members must accept the updated terms by January 31, 2027 (YouTube Help).

Tip: An AI thumbnail that matches your channel style is useful. One that makes every thumbnail look the same works against you, because sameness is exactly what the inauthentic content rule targets. Use it for drafts, then change one element by hand.

Etsy’s September update: AI suggestions and a print option

What happened. Etsy’s September 2026 “Newly Crafted” update lists several changes (Etsy Help):

  • A test of a quicker listing form that suggests titles, tags and attributes from your photos and description.
  • A test that lets buyers turn eligible digital downloads into physical prints through a third-party provider, with no fulfilment work for the seller.
  • Shared shop access, so helpers use their own login without seeing your finances.
  • Appeals opening to more policy areas, with all sellers expected to have access by the end of 2026.

Value Added Resource, which dated the update to around September 22, notes that Etsy has not said how sellers are paid on the print option, and that no fee changes came with it (Value Added Resource).

Who it affects. Etsy sellers, digital download sellers most of all.

Do this week. If you see the AI listing form, do not accept its tags blindly. Compare them with the search terms buyers actually use, as in our 20-second Etsy niche check. If your printables get the print option, check that your files are high enough resolution to print well.

How sure. Etsy calls most of these tests, so not every shop will see them.

Google Search: a spam update started September 24

What happened. Google’s Search Status Dashboard lists a “September 2026 spam update” starting September 24 (Google Search Status Dashboard). Search industry coverage says the rollout may take up to two weeks. The earlier August spam update ran August 18 to 20. There has been no core update since May (Search Engine Watch).

Who it affects. Bloggers and niche sites, especially those with lots of thin AI-written pages.

Do this week. Nothing drastic. Note today’s traffic, then wait for the rollout to finish before you judge it. If a page drops, ask whether it truly helps a reader more than the pages above it. Mass-rewriting pages mid-rollout makes it impossible to tell what caused what.

How sure. Confirmed and still rolling out.

AdSense: two quiet changes for site owners

What happened. Google says that from February 17, 2027, AdSense and Ad Manager will count a display impression only once the ad “has started to render” on the device, instead of when it starts downloading. Google warns you “may notice a decrease in total display impressions” (Google AdSense Help). Separately, on September 9 Google emailed publishers that it will switch on automatic “fallback” consent banners for European visitors on or after October 9, 2026, unless you turn off a setting (PPC Land).

Who it affects. Anyone earning from AdSense on a blog or tool site.

Do this week. Write down your current impressions, RPM (revenue per thousand impressions) and monthly earnings. In February, compare earnings, not impressions. Fewer counted impressions with the same earnings is a counting change, not a traffic loss. If you already run a proper consent tool, check that the fallback setting does not clash with it before October 9.

How sure. Both announced by Google, with firm dates.

AI music: the licensed era arrives

What happened. On September 9, Suno launched v6, a family of three models (v6, v6-wild and v6-mini) trained on music licensed from Warner Music Group, BMG and Believe. Suno plans to retire its older models, and it recently added download limits by plan tier (TechCrunch). A day later, ElevenLabs and Universal Music Group announced a multi-year licensing deal for a fan music platform. ElevenLabs says its existing Eleven Music app and Music API remain separate products (ElevenLabs).

Who it affects. Faceless YouTube channels and video makers who use AI background music.

Do this week. For every AI track in your published videos, save a screenshot of the terms and your plan tier on the day you made it. If Suno’s download caps now limit you, count how many tracks you actually use per month before paying for a higher tier. Our AI voice vs your own voice post covers the audio side of this choice.

How sure. Confirmed. Download cap numbers come from secondary sources, so check your own account page.

EU rules and court cases: labels are now law in Europe

What happened. The EU AI Act’s transparency rules (Article 50) took effect on August 2, 2026. AI providers must mark generated audio, images, video and text in a machine-readable way. People who publish deepfakes of real people or events must disclose them. Systems already on the market have until December 2, 2026. Fines for these rules go up to €15 million or 3% of worldwide turnover (Goodwin). The European Commission also published a voluntary code of practice and EU label icons (European Commission).

Who it affects. Creators and small businesses based in the EU, especially anyone making realistic AI video or images of real people.

Do this week. If you live in the EU, add a clear “AI-generated” note to any realistic depiction of a real person or event, and turn on YouTube’s altered or synthetic content setting where it applies. Do not strip AI watermarks or metadata from files you publish.

How sure. Confirmed law. How national regulators enforce it against small creators is not yet clear.

On copyright, one case to know about: in the New York Times case against OpenAI and Microsoft, the parties argued before the judge in early September, and the US Justice Department filed a brief backing OpenAI. A ruling on whether it goes to trial is expected “in the coming months” (Axios). Nothing changes for you yet.

Does this month’s AI news affect you?

Tick everything you do. Covers changes from late August to September 26, 2026. Nothing you type leaves this page.

Changes that affect you–
Urgent (act before Oct 31)–
Confirmed / not yet final–

With the default boxes ticked (faceless YouTube, AI at work, AI video or image tools), 10 of the 15 changes apply. Two are urgent: the Sora export and the Reve download. The rest are one-off tests you can spread across October. Most people will find that fewer than half of the month's headlines need anything from them.

What didn't change: hype to ignore

Some of the loudest stories this month are not things you can act on. Here is what to leave alone:

    • Gemini 4 is not out. On September 24, Google DeepMind's Koray Kavukcuoglu said Google wants to release an early version "as soon as possible", but gave no date. Gemini 3.5 Pro, teased over the summer, was never released (9to5Google).
    • "Kling 4.0" is not confirmed. Several sites have pages for it, some even offering an "API". We found no official Kling launch. Do not pay a third-party site for access to a model that has not shipped.
    • The $500 ChatGPT plan is a leak, as covered above.
    • Etsy's AI rules did not change. Etsy has required sellers to disclose AI-made work since its Creativity Standards arrived in 2024 (Bulk Mockup). Posts saying "Etsy bans AI" are wrong.
    • No Google core update this month. The September update is a spam update, not a core update.
    • YouTube's threshold change is not live. It starts February 1, 2027, and it does not remove anyone already in the Partner Program.

A useful rule: if a story has no official page, no price and no date, it is not a reason to change anything.

    What to watch in October

These are expected, not confirmed. Treat every one as "check when it lands", not "plan around it".

    • OpenAI DevDay, September 29. OpenAI's developer event is in San Francisco on September 29 (OpenAI). Expect API and developer news. The Pro Max plan might appear, but that is speculation.
    • Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5. Anthropic said "in the coming weeks". These are the cheaper models, so they matter more for API costs than Opus.
    • Gemini 4. Possible, with no date. If it lands, wait a week for independent tests before switching.
    • Google spam update finishing. Judge your traffic after Google marks it complete on the Status Dashboard.
    • October 9: AdSense fallback consent banners can switch on.
    • October 31: last day to download Reve assets.
    • December 2: the EU grace period for existing AI systems ends. More tools may add visible AI labels before then.

    A 15-minute monthly AI review

You do not need to follow AI news daily. Once a month, set a timer and do this:

    1. Minutes 0 to 3: shutdowns. Check whether any tool you use announced a closure or a model retirement. Export anything with a deadline straight away.
    2. Minutes 3 to 6: your bills. List every AI subscription, its price and renewal date. Our free subscription audit tool helps. Cancel anything you did not use in the last 30 days.
    3. Minutes 6 to 9: platform rules. Skim the official update page of each platform you earn from (YouTube, Etsy, Gumroad, AdSense). Look only for rules about money, AI or eligibility.
    4. Minutes 9 to 13: one test. Pick one new model or feature and try it on a real task from your own work. Write one line: better, same or worse.
    5. Minutes 13 to 15: decide. Make at most one change this month: switch, cancel or keep. Write it down with the date.

The "one change" limit matters. If you change three tools at once and income moves, you will not know why.

Common mistakes when AI news breaks

    • Reacting to rumours. Leaks about plans and models are often wrong on price, timing or both. Wait for an official page.
    • Buying annual plans in a fast-moving month. In one month we saw a plan closed to new sign-ups, a model family repriced and two tools shut down. Monthly billing costs a bit more but lets you leave. Pay annually only for a tool you have used every week for three months.
    • Missing export deadlines. Shutdown notices often give a few weeks. Put the date in your calendar the day you see it.
    • Chasing every new model. A model that tops a leaderboard may not be better at your task. Test on your own work.
    • Reading reporting changes as performance changes. The AdSense impression change will make your impressions drop and your RPM rise on paper. Compare earnings.
    • Letting AI tools make your content look the same. The new YouTube and Etsy AI helpers are convenient, but platforms penalise repetitive, generic output. Keep a human decision in every piece.

    FAQ

Is GPT-6 Astra available on ChatGPT Plus?

Only inside ChatGPT Work and Codex. In normal chat, GPT-6 Pro (powered by Astra) is for Pro, Business and Enterprise plans, according to OpenAI's help centre as of September 2026.

Can I still sign up for ChatGPT Pro at $200?

No. New sign-ups and upgrades have been paused since September 10, 2026. The $100 Pro plan is still available, and existing $200 subscribers keep their plan.

Is Claude Fable 5.1 included in Claude Pro?

No. On Pro it is paid with usage credits. Max plans can use up to half their weekly limit on it at no extra cost. Free cannot use it.

Can I still download my Sora videos?

OpenAI says to export at sora.chatgpt.com/sunset as soon as possible and that data is permanently removed after the final export window. Do it now rather than wait.

Do I have to label AI content on YouTube?

YouTube asks creators to disclose realistic altered or synthetic content. If you live in the EU, the AI Act also requires you to disclose deepfakes of real people or events. For animated or clearly unrealistic content, labels are usually not required, but check YouTube's current help page.

Will the YouTube Partner Program change affect my channel?

If you are already in the program, YouTube says the new thresholds will not affect you, but you must accept the updated terms by January 31, 2027. New applicants face higher thresholds from February 1, 2027.

Why will my AdSense impressions drop next year?

From February 17, 2027, Google counts an impression only when the ad starts to render, not when it starts downloading. Ads that never showed stop counting. Watch your earnings, not the impression number.

Should I wait for Gemini 4 before choosing an AI plan?

No. There is no release date. Choose based on what works for your tasks today, pay monthly, and review when Gemini 4 actually ships.
